Appropriate steps to take to optimize a single page site

any effective techniques?

I have a site consisting of one page that needs to be promoted in SE. I would really appreciate if someone told me if i have it in the right order:

1. Choose 2-3 relevant keywords
2. Write title/meta tags
3. Make sure the text word count is over 200 and use keywords in content (h1's, <b>,<i>,<u>, etc)
4. Make sure the design is not heavy -- page opens quick
5. Write alt text with keywords
6. Start link development -- is it ok for other sites to exchange links with a single page sites. Who would want to swap links with me? Where first shall i apply for reciprocals?
7. Do i need to submit the site to some directories?

I know, my question may sound silly but please help me out with this

Hello Strider. I don't think you are going to get any mileage from a one page site. Your best option would be to utilize a PPC/CPC strategy as that is probably going to be the only method of marketing that is going to bring in any visitors.

Is it possible to break that one page site into at least 5-10 pages of relative content? Each page specific to a particular keyword phrase that you are targeting?

This is actually a sort of advertisement poster and hardly can be split into separate pages.

However if i go PPC/CPC where do I go first? Google adwords maybe? I wonder what for a budget should suffice for this.

I would probably give Overture a try first as their reach is a little more widespread than Google Adwords. But, it is all relative to the industry you are in.

Budget? Hard to determine a budget until you've done the keyword research. A good place to start would be Overture...

Once you've determined which keyword phrases you are going to target, you then need to look at the total number of searches for the previous month. This will give you a general idea of the type of volume that phrase is generating. Mind you, the numbers are quite inflated at Overture so you need to take that into consideration when determining your budget.

If he had access to some other sites for links he could do some damage in the serps with a single page... I had it happen accidentally once and have done it on purpose since.

From what I could tell, you have to refer to it alot from the right busy neighborhoods.

I don't generally engage in link swapping as my business is consulting and not building.

In this case I have a single page site that appeared in the SERPs on page 2 or 3 of one of the most popular search terms. I had sent traffic to it via a blatant reference from at least two other sites on a related topic, via a link, but the page itself didn't link to anywhere significant. The other sites would have been PR6 or perhaps 7, nothing more.

I won't describe a way to purposefully do this (I don't have one that is reliable anyway) but that initial discovery was in an extremely competitive KW market (2 words always paired in order, definitive for the niche, on every top list for a long time). Since it was a genuine reference with no SEO intentions, I thought perhaps I got an honourable SERP position for good behaviour :-)
