Search Engines and Layers

Do the search engines recognize text inside of a layer? You would think they would since essentially a layer is just a form of a <div> tag, but then again the spiders are rather primitive and layers are only supported on 4.0 and up browsers. Please let me know if you have had any experience with submitting sites utilizing layers to the search engines.

They do. (Well, most do ...) In fact, it's a fairly safe way of putting invisible text on your page without being penalized - better yet if they're CSS remote controlled to avoid lack of contrast between font and background issues.)

Thanks fantomaster, very good news. I've also been thinking of using them to get indexable text on my clients sites that use flash (text on a layer with the flash layer above it)(currently using a hidden frame with limited success). Do you know which engines don't support layers?
