Different search results for example and example.com

I have an issue that has been bothering me. In Bing, if you search for my site, "Example", it shows the site listing with no sitelinks. If you search for my site as "Example.com", it shows the site listing plus a number of sitelinks. In Google, if you search for my site "Example", it shows the site listing with some sitelinks and a post from the site's Google+ account. If you search for my site "Example.com", it shows the site listing with even more sitelinks but no post from the site's Google+ account. I feel like the site is being looked at as two different sites: one at "Example" and one at "Example.com". Any ideas on how I can fix this?

that seems like expected behavior.
have you seen similar SERP behavior for other Example(.com) searches in your niche or in other niches?

What phranque said. It is expected behavior. The searches are in fact different.

Example.com is much more specific to the domain than example. Compare serps for [webmasterworld] with serps for [webmasterworld.com]

If your domain was keyword.com, it's not unheard of that you might not be #1 on a search for [keyword]... but not being #1 on a search for [keyword.com] would likely indicate a penalty.
