I've been contemplating how best to go about creating a links section on a site I own. My options...
a) link to sites I personally like.
b) look at other sites like Dmoz and copy them.
c) create a full on free link-directory.
d) create a free links topsite.
I'm leaning towards d and will allow nofollow-free links but the entire topsite section would be pre-approved. If the site doesn't meet minimum quality guidelines it doesn't get in. etc. The topsite would rank sites based on pageviews or incoming clicks or outgoing clicks, haven't decided yet.
There was a discussion here back in 2005 according to a search but not much since then - [

My concerns are
- will simply using a popular topsite script instantly be frowned upon by search engines?
- will the excessive reciprocal links in fact hurt rankings?
My gut feeling is that it would be helpful to my visitors, they may find new sites, as long as I can keep the quality high and gaming to a minimum... but how bad is the possible fallout... just because it's a topsite?
