We have UK and US sites for a B2B B&M business.

A lot of the content is very similar, just tweaked a bit here and there for the US market.

I now have press releases (which are on the UK site) but I want to feature on the US site. I don't really want to muck about with them.

What are my chances of getting penalised for duplicate content?

you won't get penalized.
rather your content will be filtered which is perfect for your purpose since you want your .com content filtered for US searches and your .co.uk content filtered for UK searches.
