Email messages can go viral if they have that quality. Similarly video clips can go viral if they have that quality. If the project deliverable can answer the question "will my audience multiply my marketing efforts by sending links to the deliverable (or forwarding it)?", then it is viral in intent. However, until this happens in practice you can't claim to have made a viral campaign.

Email marketing refers to messages sent out by a marketer to a mailing list.

Viral marketing refers to people in the general public sharing that message, video, website URL with their contacts. The term comes from how viruses replicate and continue to spread without having to rely on the original host or infection point. Thus, marketing material that has "gone viral" has managed to continue to be shared & delivered by people other than the original marketer.
