I've been working on seo for my website for the past couple months, hence been reading a lot here :) .

Achieved some pretty decent results from google. though not yahoo and msn.

did the URL rewriting , optimized meta tags ,images name-titles-and alt,headings tags, submitted the site map , got loads of pages indexed ,built content,a few backlinks. Got PR1 for a couple of competitive keywords , page 1 to page 3 for loads of relevant keywords.

whats left to be done{and more concerning} :
controlling the landing page for keywords.
Understanding exactly how a search engine will take a specific keyword query to a specific page .
of course getting PR1 for more keywords :) .
getting backlinks --> why would a PR1 site link to me ?

well seo is part art ,part science.

How to go about with learning the science part ? cos i'm the one in the startup who took the seo part , wary of so called " training seo institutes" , and outsourcing a big No.

ne help , suggestions, or advice would be of great value .

You need to do more reading. This forum and other well known established sites that write on SEO as a minimum.

By the way, you are mixing PageRank (PR) with the ranking of the page for a keyword, i.e. your page in SERPs.

if you have got your site at the page 1 so then what are you worried about now... you've done well already

now working on PageRank (PR) and need for backlinks from PR1-5 sites .

and getting page1 result for more keywords :) and some relevant landing page for specific pages.

well there seems to be loads more to work on , like cache control , page speed , validations , of course further optimization of content , content duplication issues :)

Worry less about the PR of the page.
Worry more about whether the link would be useful to the people visiting the other site.
