I have run some tests and my pages are typically around 18% text.

What are you finding and what do you recommend?

IMO if you can get content up to 50% you're doing great. 5% is dreadful and usually means you should be stripping code from pages AND adding content.

From my experience -- though I would not call this authoritative -- 18% is on the low end of acceptable. I'd certainly try to improve it if it were my site.

A lot depends on the specific nature of the pages though. There are no hard and fast rules here.
