Can Multiple Domains Be Beneficial?

Having more than one domain name per site, good or bad?

It's evident to me that having keywords in your domain name is high priority. I'm new to SEO, but have been doing lots of reading. I am curious as to whether obtaining multiple domain names for one site with relevant keywords in them is good practice or not. I have read that google and other SEs will penalize you for having duplicate content; however, if you do a 301 redirect from your other domain(s) it will eliminate this problem. I have yet to find any articles about whether this is good practice or not. Any suggestions?

One 301 with an on target domain should be ok. Up to 10 in special cases. Many sites have been banned for trying to 'combine PR' of *unrelated* domains, however, I have heard Google engineers recommend pointing all unused domains in a similar category to one place, so what you describe at least 'shouldn't hurt'.

I'll have to give this a test, as it seems interesting and has potential.

The main value of 301ing a kw domain to the branded domain is to get the type in traffic, and to pass on any link authority that might have accrued to the kw domain if it was a live site. But just 301ing a new domain with kw in the domain won't do much if anything. 301ing is a traffic and link equity thing mainly.

i have seen multiple companies using multiple domains to gain the #1 spot.

they use the following methods

www.red-widget.com
www.blue-widget.com

alternatively you could have multple domains with different languages

www.domain.co.uk
www.domain.de
www.domain.nl

the other alternatve is to have member sites all of the same industry

e.g

www.red-widget.com which cross links with
www.blue-blue -grandoise-widgets.com
ect

an example is like car hire and accommodation from travel
