What's changed in 3 years?

I remember reading Brett's 12-month program and how we all swore by it years ago. But I've been out of it for quite some time, so I have no idea what's changed in the past three years or so.

I assume that content is still king, but probably long gone are the days of the monthly Google Dance where we all anticipated PageRank updates and watched the index shift around.

So what has changed in the past few years? Do people still email each other asking for link exchanges (I haven't seen much of it recently)? How does the webmaster of 2007/2008 promote his new site?

Social Media Tagging and bookmarking have been making quite a buzz for a while, but you've still got to have great content.

Most important? Still quality relevant incoming links - paid, reciprocal or organic, thats the key to success.
