Hi,

From my Goog Analytics, I can see that I'm getting a few visitors from Google Search Engine everyday. These visitors arrive at my site through "5 to 6 word keyphrases). What should I do next?

Continue to build new content and pages?
Continue to upgrade current content and pages hoping that better content will result in shorter keyphrases.
Continue to build inlinks to the main home page? Or just focus to build inlinks to these pages that got visitors from Google?

I'd concentrate on all of the above. :)

Get some nice short phrase text inlinks from sites to other interior pages on your site. This will make those pages less lonely.

Short, informative phrases are always preferred in the web - that's all. If you can form a short, informative phrase instead of a long and practically saying no more than the short one, go for the briefness.

There are a lot more people searching for california bicycle tours than bother to search for scenic cycling tours of california including wine country and mountains, free lunches provided and a former olympic medalist guide.

It would be easy to dominate search results for the long phrase, but being fourth for the short phrase would send more traffic. Go for a bunch of short phrases, people search in all sorts of weird ways and you can end up doing really well on a few. Don't fixate on one phrase.

my concern was for the anchor text for ranking purpose.

I always thougth I had to use as many keyword as possible on a single anchor text to take advantage of the possible combinations of the included keywords.

but now i realized that a long anchor text will be worth only in case of a search frase including all the keywords and not for the different combination of them.

anchor text example:

"buy, sell, auction, old, new, used widgets"

will make the site rank only in a search for

"buy, sell, auction, old, new, used widgets"

and not for separate searches of:

buy widgets
sell widgets
auction widgets
old widgets
new widgets
used widgets

if I want to rank for those searches I will have to use the 5 different anchor text.

is this correct?

Ummm, well, it's not that simple. Either can work some. But the one that's just the same as what they're searching for will place higher than the one that's all rearranged. I have number one placements for pages on widget events but can't even be found for widget event. Partly strong link text on the plural, partly stiffer competition on the singular.

You'll do best if you get multiple phrases aimed at multiple pages on your site. Don't try to direct everything to your homepage. Usually the most effective are short keyword phrases in the middle of a paragraph that's on topic.

While visiting my friend at the Kentucky Derby I saw the coolest blue horse widgets. They were a deep, deep blue, extra nice, and all widgety. A little expensive but worth it if you've got racehorses.

If you're writing in a forum or on a blog, keep this in mind. But when all they're offering is a link you can't be too demanding, so go for something resembling natural language. Get some different phrases, not all the same.

Hellow Warmslei,

I use Google Analytics. It is a free service by Google. All you need is a Gmail email address.

You don't have an idea what they do!
