Hi All

Would like to say a big HELLO to you all as this is my first post on Webmaster World!

Got a quick question which I hope someone can answer for me. If I were to change the extension of a page from .html to .asp, is it still necessary to create 301 redirects for the .html pages? The page URL will still remain the same but only the extensions will change.

Appreciate any assistance here.

Cheers

Changing the extension does change the url.

Search "301 redirect", "duplicate content", "supplemental results" on webmasterworld for much discussion on this.

I would recommend not changing a lot of URLs at once because it appears to get close scrutiny by the search engines.

You might be interested in this post from 301 Redirect Hell [webmasterworld.com] which says

If a page moves within a site, perhaps to another folder, or the URL Changes Case, the 301 is probably best. If a page is gone, with no replacement, then the 404 is the correct thing to use.
