I am completly stumped- I have a potential client whose site is ranking very well and I can't figure out why.

They're home page is javascript and is the page that is ranking well in the se's. The only seo work I can see ont he site is just meta tags. They have a PR of 7 with 134 links and most of them are PR of 4.

I dont know if we should take them on or not because they are ranking well and I sure don't want to start making suggestions and cost them rankings! Any suggestions?

Bit difficult to judge without seeing the site in question. The number of links from high PR sites would certainly count towards good rankings. And if they are not going for hugely competitive terms it stands to reason that the link pop alone could do the trick.

However, this is no reason to not take them on as a client. With a bit of creative thinking you can always come up with ways of furthering their placements. If they have great rankings for the site as it is you could help them find a way to grow the site and introduce a new section that will produce rankings for a greater variety of terms and therefore more traffic.

You will have to do some research into their site logs and their market in general to see what their target audience is looking for. You're not looking for the obvious here, but new areas that they could explore and possibly exploit.

PR of 7 with 134 links and most of them are PR of 4.

I suspect that number is much higher. Check backlinks in AllTheWeb.com

A vast network of PR1 - 3 could be behind the success.

Also note: straight PageRank is not the only factor in top SERPs.

The link anchor is extremely important.

A single page website (much like a JavaScript "linked" site) can receive top SERPs just by these linking conditions.
