Is RSS dying?

I notice this forum gets very few posts, and am wondering if RSS is dying, (due to Atom or other technologies)...

I have a news article CMS system that I produce RSS1 and RSS2 feeds for the top headlines, and would gladly add other formats if it gets the news spread further.

What syndicated news formats are people using?

RSS1?
RSS2?
Atom?
Other?

I doubt RSS is dying, judging by the growth in the numbers of feeds on various RSS aggregators. It may simply be the "Really Simple" part of RSS, it doesn't take long to figure out how to make a feed.

I do wonder who is reading, however. Is reading RSS mainly a geek and blogger thing, or will it become more mainstream? I can see that happening if major sites and ISPs allow users to easily subscribe to the feeds of their choice.

Actually, I think it is the opposite. I think RSS is only now starting to gain some mainstream "exposure" - and the interest from webmasters is and will continue to follow ;).

Maybe if Outlook came with a built-in aggregator, newsfeeds would move into the mainstream. Until then, I think subscribing to them wll remain a somewhat geeky practice.

Which doesn't mean that we shouldn't a) cater to the not-inconsidearble number of people who do subscribe to them and b) be prepared for the coming mass market.
