does anybody know what libwww-perl/5.803 is?

"Libwww-perl is a collection of Perl modules which provides a simple and consistent application programming interface (API) to the World-Wide Web."

You can do fancy things using it.
While it is per se just an innocent collection of modules, programmers of nasty bots know how to use it, too.

Thanks for the info Romeo.

The reason I ask is that I have had many hits on a website from someone or something and the agent is libwww-perl. Could this be a nasty robot?

It could be, like Romeo said it looks like the default name for the lib-www Perl module. Its definitely a bot of some kind, what its doing with your content its getting is anyone's guess.

I would make note of the IP and keep an eye on it, if its running wild on your site then you can ban it in robots.txt, and if it doesn't listen to that then block it.
