About the robots tag for Googlebot

Is it necessary?

Hi,

I checked the source code for a site that I was visiting. I saw the following tags:

<META NAME="GOOGLEBOT" CONTENT="INDEX, FOLLOW">
<META NAME="robots" CONTENT="index,follow">

IMO these don't do anything and can be removed.
Is there something I am overlooking?

What is even the point of having "index" and "follow" standardized when they are the expected default behavior.

no, I never use those, I believe the default is index, follow so the only reason you would need them is if you don't want it indexed or followed
