Hello Everyone,

I have a requirement where my company acquired another company now let’s say our company’s website is www.home.com and the other company’s website is www.old.com . Now we want to change the domain of www.old.com to www.old.home.com i.e. use the sub domain of our current website.

I am thinking that if we create the sub domain at our end i.e. www.old.home.com and do the DNS switch at www.old.com then all the requests coming to this website will be redirected to the newly created sub domain i.e. www.old.home.com.

However, I don’t know how efficient is this solution?

Also the old domain i.e. www.old.com is referred from many other websites from different domains, the old URL is embedded in different SAP systems too.

1) I believe that I am doing the DNS switch, so I think the old URLs don’t need to be corrected on other systems be it SAP or other websites on different domains. Am I correct ?
2) The other websites have SSO feature so if someone is logged in www.diff.com and access www.old.com , today he doesn’t have to login again, but do you think it will work automatically after DNS switch?
3) I know I need to consider SEO too, as it may have an impact on the ranking, could you tell me what would you suggest?
4) Also, can you tell me if you think I need to consider many other things as a part of this change?

Thanks.

This line makes me uneasy, because it makes it sound as if you're planning to point requests for old.com directly to old.home.com. If so, you've got instant duplicate content with no redirect. If you were redirecting, there would be no need for a DNS change at the old site-- unless, coincidentally, you're moving the skeleton of the old site to a different server. But that has nothing to do with the new name.

Dunno about anyone else, but the name form "www.subdomain.domain.tld" gives me the fantods.
