How many search engines do I need to register with?

Registering a new website with Google goes without saying, do I need to bother registering with any others?
If I do need to register with others, which ones?
Thanks Greg

Welcome to WebmasterWorld Gertcher.
Google, Microsoft and Yahoo! all support the SiteMaps protocol [webmasterworld.com]. You would want to make sure that they know where your sitemap is.

Hello Bill
Thanks for your reply. I have already registered with Google MS and Yahoo, is it necessary to bother with the likes of Netscape, AOL, Altavista, Excite, Lycos, and others said to be in the top ten.

Netscape now redirects to AOL. AOL uses Google search results. Altavista uses Yahoo results. Excite and Lycos are tiny and don't have their own crawlers.
Ask Jeeves is probably the only other search engine worth getting traffic from. You can't submit to them but you can ping them an XML sitemap.

Hello sem4u
Looks like I do not need to bother with any others, which is what I thought from the start, but I needed confirmation I was doing it right.
