removing permanent redirect

Earlier we had redirected the main page of our site permanently to a fileA.htm
Now, we do not want the permanent redirect but put the content in the main page index.html and remove the permanent redirect.

The question is how search engine is going to treat this change.
-will it still keep redirecting to the old page or will it start honoring the current page?
- Any specific step that we need to do so that the permanent re-direction is gone
-In general how much time it takes to honor this change if it does?

if you make changes to a 301 redirect the search engines will take notice and follow the changes. how fast this occurs depends on how often the search engines are spidering. for more information you probably want to ask this in a better matching category like the Apache category (assuming you are using an apache server)
