Interesting ..

Just an aside but how many of you have used Miva?

When I started using HotMetalPro from Softquad they were promoting Miva enabled hosting solutions but I rarely came across anyone using it to make sites sell.

Those that I have come across seem to have stopped and started using php mysql solutions because of the added online support information out there.

Would be interested to know how many use it / rate it?

Guys we currently use it for one of our sites and have found it very useful. Sticky me if you want to see the functionality that MIVA can provide. There is a rather large community of programmers whos only income is fromMIVA related programming and module creation.

It can be useful, but they are moving toward a more closed development model - making it more proprietary than it already is - I think that's going to hurt them in the long run, there are already grumblings in that developer community, notably on Miva's own mailing list.

We still use Miva Merchant for some storefronts, but with some of Miva's recent changes (requiring an expensive compiler) - we too are moving away from it. It's not portable like a PHP or Perl and MySQL based solution is - you can't just uproot a Miva based site and expect to easily plunk it down on another server.

Hi paulszymanski, I am interested in any functionality or security which may be easier to accomplish with Miva than with php mysql. If there are areas where Miva has advantages i would be interested to hear about it.

vibgyor79, that turnover figure for Miva sure concerns me, I used to do more than that with a product range that had a much smaller available market (not software I have to say).

I've been developing sites with Miva for 3 or 4 years now. Miva offers a complete ecommerce solution at a relatively low cost. Plus, it's quite user friendly once set up. I deal with a lot of computer novices whom have been able to figure it out. Miva also offers the ability to add functionality through the use of modules (like Photoshop plugins). If you can't find an off the shelf module for what you need (not likely) there are also a slew of programmers out there whom will write custom modules for a fee.
