i didnt find this response particuarily convincing so after a short discussion here (http://www.webmasterworld.com/forum21/7587.htm), i asked them to elaborate, and they refused. so i basically told them i didnt believe they had a good argument (well, called them liars :)) and told them to get the developers to do the job properly - pointing them to a number of sites that have no trouble with opera. i also pointed them in the direction of this thread on the same subject:

anyways today i visit the site and boom! straight in. yay!
moral for opera users: if they lock you out, just ask why and dont let them fob you off.
if anyone would care to check that im not going mad/looking at a cacheed version from when i set the ua to ie, please sticky
