I have a layout, however, which has minor problems in Opera 5 and 6. Nothing that hurts function, it just looks a little sloppy.
My question is, how many Opera 5 and 6 users are out there? On the one hand, Opera users tend to be tech savvy and therefore want the latest. On the other hand, they have to buy Opera and therefore might be unwilling to upgrade.
What do you do? What do you see in your server logs for those of you who get a lot of hits from Opera?

However, I have both Opera 6 and 7 on my computer for testing purposes :)
What I meant is that if you have paid and have gotten rid of the banner, you may prefer the sleeker look you get and be unwilling to pay for the upgrade or to browse with ads.
So what I'm trying to get at is how many people
1. Use Opera as their primary browser
2. Don't use the current major version.
Maybe my site looked so bad in Opera/6 that the one poor user decided never to return.
I don't mind contributing the small dollar amount to help Opera with their expenses.
P.S. Your Opera stats will vary depending on the industry. Expect to see a higher percentage in the webmaster communities. Also, many Opera users are savvy and will switch up the userAgent just to mess up the stats! ;)
P.S.S. Opera is a must have browser for testing. I keep three versions of Opera in the Quick Launch; 7.11, 7.23 and now 7.51. I was at 7.5 until the most recent upgrade which addressed a favicon bug of some sort.

I suspected as much from Opera users. My site doesn't look terrible in Opera 5 and 6, just a small little glitch, but I would fix it if, say, half of your Opera users were still running Opera 6.

I completely agree. I was just wondering how many version back to test. Like, I don't test on NS3. I always test on NS4, even if just to verify that it doesn't work at all ;-). But I was thinking that though it's not that old, I could quite testing with Opera 5 and probably 6.

I'm not as quick to upgrade other browsers cuz I only use them for testing. and of course, I keep IE 5.5 loaded on an older Win98SE machine ALWAYS because it is the most problematic browser in existence.
I also don't bother too much with Netscape 4, unless the client has agreed to pay the higher costs of developing for a legacy browser that old. I also won't go back earlier than Netscape 4.5, either, unless the client wants to pay a kings ransom for me to do it!
Opera is a great browser, but I can't give up the warm and fuzzies I get from all the Mozilla features I love so much!

Opera has always identified as "Opera" still when it is set to identify as another browser, so that does not mess up stats:
Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.0) Opera 7.23 [en]

I use Opera 7.5 a fair amount, but my main browser is Moz Firefox. I have a collection of obscure and old browsers for testing purposes (Amaya, Arachne, OffByOne...) The way I see it, the more browsers I can test with, the better. Even between Opera versions, there are differences in the way it handles code, so it's always good to know that something you've just validated works with a myriad of test software. Comforting, even. And sometimes it makes you realize just how good those Norwegian programmers are that they got the compliance so quickly in an old browser!
Even though I visit the Opera website about once a month, I guess one update a year is enough for me (esp considering the standards aren't changing that frequently), so I wouldn't necessarily expect users to upgrade every few months.
