I discovered today that some of my non-profit pages has been translated to local languages. This means that search from many european countries can translate my pages, and I'm on page 1 for many keywords.
For me this is very possitive, but I guess this has been the case for many trusted sites for a while.

As a newbee I just need to know if this is a possitive sign or if it's something that now happends to most sites.

Do you mean that people are accessing your site with translation software or that somebody has posted a translated copy on a different site?

I think I made a mistake.

What I discovered was that google now had the option to translate my pages. All pages is writen in my local language. This was discoverd when I saw many foreign visitors all over Europe visiting many of my pages, and even came back to my site after a while.

If you are getting a lot of visits translating to a particular language then you should do a quick cost/benefit of translating the site professionally.

Even my restaurant French is enough to pick out literal translations of parts of my site that make no sense at all.

Depends upon the product and market. I've got two small sites of my own that I've had translated to Spanish by a native speaker that is fluent in English and understands both my intended context, and the Latino/Hispanic translation. It has worked out very well. Her fees are reasonable, the quality is good, and they do okay.

In my 'real bill paying job', we do a lot of international business, and ship all over Europe especially; more and more in Eastern Europe. It is strictly an English language site, but English is the de facto world standard, and we ship internationally every day. Unless one needs a significant presence with a site in the native language, I wouldn't worry about it. If you do need that presence, invest in a professional translator.
