Microsoft's "Get Windows 10" nagware that has been driving some people bonkers will be killed off in July, when Redmond pulls its free upgrade offer.

A spokesperson for the software giant told us today:

Details are still being finalized, but on July 29th the Get Windows 10 app that facilitates the easy upgrade to Windows 10 will be disabled and eventually removed from PCs worldwide. Just as it took time to ramp up and roll out the Get Windows 10 app, it will take time to ramp it down.

It appears it might take as much time to get this nagware off as it took to get it installed. :) Fortunately it will be DISABLED by MS at the end of July.

I've been taking calls from friends that are asking how to get rid of the nagware.

I told them, upgrade and it'll go. The alternative is to just hang on in there.

I'll be glad to see it go, although, I suspect, there will be a rush to upgrade as people hang off from upgrading until the last minute.

One of our machines seems to have forced an install they other day. We just turned it on and got a "installing Win 10" alert when it booted up. The nagware has been bugging us for a long time, why it installed now I don't know.

I did the revert/uninstall/whatever and I'm hoping it won't try to reinstall 10.

I thought i had the machine set to no automatic updates/installs, but can't prove it.

I have found the Never10 tool by GRC to have stopped all nagging about upgrades on my systems.
