Microsoft demos breakthrough in real-time translated conversations

Skype Translator results from decades of work by the industry, years of work by our researchers, and now is being developed jointly by the Skype and Microsoft Translator teams. The demo showed near real-time audio translation from English to German and vice versa, combining Skype voice and IM technologies with Microsoft Translator, and neural network-based speech recognition. Skype Translator is a great example of why Microsoft invests in basic research.

I have my doubts about this technology. Machine translation still isn't up to par. This may work for casual conversation, but I'd not trust it for a business deal negotiation.

That's an exciting development. Without the processor power capable of running the software it wouldn't be possible, of course.

It's a long way from Start Trek's Universal Translator, of course. ;)

Let's hope it works a lot better than autocorrect as you speak!

Then again, this may be a whole new genre of comedy.

"What's happening? Why did the translator stop talking?"
"He's waiting for the verb."
