Report: Microsoft To Launch Smartphones [uk.reuters.com]

Microsoft Corp will formally offer a series of smartphones using the revamped version of its mobile operating system on October 11, the Wall Street Journal reported Friday, citing people familiar with the launch plans.

AT&T Inc will start offering these phones four weeks after the launch, which is expected to be centered in New York, with additional events in other cities, the report said.

On Oct. 11, Microsoft and its partners plan to announce the initial wave of handsets that will use Windows Phone 7, a thoroughly overhauled version of the company's cellphone operating system. Mr. Ballmer believes the software will compete more effectively against Apple Inc.'s iPhone and Google Inc.'s Android operating system.

Microsoft has gotten more aggressive against Android in other ways. The company filed a lawsuit Friday against Motorola Inc., alleging the handset maker is infringing Microsoft patents in its Android phones. Motorola vowed to fight the suit.

Glad to see this. Can't wait to see how some of my apps fair in the market and as a consumer, i love the fact services I enjoy are now to be enjoyed by my friends because of this phone launch expanding the ecosystem that has been US Centric for so long.

i believe it will be a rocky start, but at the same time, they may surprise the market and toss out some upsets for other people :)

I saw a tablet review on TC that was running the Win 7 interface. It was not very impressive. Slow was one thing that came to mind. And the touch screen was not very responsive. Not sure if the problem was hardware or software. No way to tell for sure from the demo.

Windows Phone 7 doesn't run windows 7 :) In fact from what I gather Windows 8 may borrow some functionality from Windows Phone 7 and Windows Phone 7 owes its UI to the Zune HD interface.

I've seen the HP Windows 7 table tand the only complaint I have is the keyboard interface.. the performance wasn't an issue. Just nothing is touch centric by default.

I'm not a big tablet person myself.. I type faster than i write as this point in time and the tablets hinder that for me at this point in time - ipad et all

We are into mobile apps development and let me assure you that the real thing that you will get in your hands will be far better than any iPhone, iPad, Android or Blackberry. Just wait for some real handsets from HTC and tablets from Samsung to launch.

TC being a Google fanboy must have picked up some old prototype of a no-name manufacturer to review.
