Maximum number of files and subfolders within a single folder

I would like to know the maximum number of files and subfolders within a single folder under NTFS system.

I plan on keeping around 500,000 files or more within one single folder. Would that work? I haven't copied such a large no of files to a same folder to check whether this works or not. If anyone has an idea, please let me know.

Would I need to make some special settings to enable a large number of files in a single folder or it works naturally in NTFS.

Checking Microsoft's resource page [microsoft.com] suggests that you can have as many as you like, so long as the total on the volume doesn't exceed 4,294,967,295. I imagine, however, that your ability to view the folder will degrade based on memory consumption.

A quote from the page:
If you use large numbers of files in an NTFS folder (300,000 or more), disable short-file name generation, especially if the first six characters of the long file names are similar.
