Microsoft has named the day on which it will force PC-makers to stop shipping PCs with Windows 7 pre-installed.

The Windows Lifecycle fact sheet has been updated to record the fact that as of October 31, 2016 no more PCs will be sold with Windows 7 Professional burned onto the boot disk.

Retail sales of Windows 7, all versions, ceased way back on October 31st 2013.

I'll be an heretic...

I was never fussed by Windows 7. Actually my only principal exposure has been on family and friends PC's with it installed - when things go wrong. At my volunteer rescue work place I have to live with it, and thankfully when things go wrong, I have to work entirely intuitively. OK not a big deal is it?

A bit over a week ago, one of the administrators couldn't download a file from one of the base laptops to a USB drive. I did it after about ten minutes [I was being made up again as a "victim" for a regular first aid course re-certification course at the time], and I'm damned if I know how I did it.

I dunno, Win XP, 7, 8. 8,1, now 10 - most of us manage to find our way around them - sometimes cursing aloud. Would I install Win 7 one someone's machine I was resurrecting for the disadvantaged?

NO!

Only if it was the cheapest option for them or me.

I said I was an heretic. Then again I still have IE 11 in my browser armoury. And I would install Windows 10 on any machine.
