Hi there, Everyone:

I downloaded some files to a USB drive from my office computer, and took the usb drive and plugged it into my home computer, I was unable to open the files.

I basically got a white dialog box with a red warning something along the lines of not having permissions or the file is not shared. (sorry, I should have written it down when I was at home this morning).

I am back at the office now (the computer I originally downloaded the files on). Is there something I can do to make it so that my other machine will open these files?

They are mostly png, jpg, and photoshop psd files.

Thanks in advance.

View the contents on the USB drive and change the permissions. The psd files may need to be changed at their source to allow changes to permissions. This is not a universal solution, there are network and account settings in a workplace that may require admin assistance to make changes.

Thanks, not2easy.

How do I change the permissions in Windows 7? (I know how to do it in Linux)

Is it Right Click -> properties -> security -> edit

Then I see the users on THIS computer (my office computer)

But (obviously) not the users of my home computer.

Do I need to change the permissions when I have the USB drive plugged into my HOME computer? (the one where I can't open the files).

Oh, and by the way, I AM the office admin for my office computer - I'm a computer army of one! So I do have admin access.

Yes, you would want to change the permissions on the files before copying them - then change them back for the originals if those are the settings you want for those files. I really can't help you with the exact steps on Windows. I have changed permissions on files myself in Windows, it was many moons ago - your steps sound about right.

Might check your optional Win7 updates (if you do not routinely load all updates). There was one a while back (can't recall when) that was expressly to correct this problem. Apparently for some USB drives/flash there is a stack overflow, which means the drive is never seen. Maybe someone else can remember the update number...

See if the anonymous user has permission to the container and objects within.

Directory traversal might be another although rarer issue.
