Before you install Windows Technical Preview

A preview for PC experts

Windows Technical Preview is here today, but it’s a long way from done. We’re going to make it faster, better, more fun at parties...you get the idea. Join the Windows Insider Program to make sure you get all the new features that are on the way. If you’re okay with a moving target and don’t want to miss out on the latest stuff, keep reading. Technical Preview could be just your thing.

Download and install the preview only if you

Want to try out software that’s still in development and like sharing your opinion about it.

Don’t mind lots of updates or a UI design that might change significantly over time.

Really know your way around a PC and feel comfortable troubleshooting problems, backing up data, formatting a hard drive, installing an operating system from scratch, or restoring your old one if necessary.

Know what an ISO file is and how to use it.

Aren't installing it on your everyday computer.

We're not kidding about the expert thing. So if you think BIOS is a new plant-based fuel, Tech Preview may not be right for you...

IN ACTION - Ian's first Grrrr

Yep Mr. Microsoft strikes again, shades of the trauma of Win 8.1 upgrade from Win 8.

I selected the:

English (United Kingdom) 64-bit (x64) Download (3.79 GB)

A lousy 3.79 GB file? Over 40 minutes download so far for an ISO file? On a bad day I download at 2 Mb/s.

Augurs well for the future? An omen?

Anyhow, something new to play with. I've gotta jack up another machine to let this beast loose on for testing.

I will keep folks updated on the impending trials and tribulations.

[ADDED] That size file normally downloads in half the time for me.

Well the first trials and tribulations for those interested.

I had proposed to install Windows 10 on an older XP machine. There is no way I'll ever install it on my regular DeskTop.

WTP 32 Bit does a giant dummy spit. After a fair bit of investigation, it seems that machines I found suitable for upgrade to Win 7 will not work even for Win 8 or 8.1. Among the number of reasons, the older CPU's do not have "No Execute".

For the moment, there is no Win 10 Upgrade Assistant, so you need to run the closest thing to it.

RULE #1: Save time and frustration by downloading and running:

Upgrade to Windows 8.1 from Windows Vista or Windows XP

[windows.microsoft.com ]

I suspect that even many machines now happily running Win 7, will not be able to progress beyond that.

If nothing else, see if your XP/Win 7 machines are destined for the scrap heap. No doubt some "might" be capable of CPU upgrade, but the vast majority will not be.

Obviously any late model Win 7 machine would easily migrate to later Win O/S. But even Win 7 is now becoming limited, and I suspect Microsoft will make it even more so in the future.

I now happily run Win 8.1 to my requirements, after having "tamed" it. I suspect Win 10 will most simply replicate what I already have.

IanCP, thanks for the updates.

I've found that the hardware on some of my XP machines is just not up to it. Too many conflicts and driver problems, and it's cheaper to buy new hardware than to spend days messing with updating drivers, etc. The same goes for Win7 machines here.

I have one candidate here that may get an upgrade, but I won't be trying the beta. It's brave of you!

Obviously, the consumer version will have additional ease of installation bells and whistles, and perhaps it might even work better than the win 8 upgrade (wishful thinking). lol

Keep us updated.
