Compaq won't start!

Hi, my old Compaq that runs windows ME (or... ran ME) won't start. At all.

I see a screen that says COMPAQ but nothing ever loads. I have tried running the restore software that came with the PC, and it apparently ran, but nothing has changed. Any help, please?

Old implies it has a floppy disk drive. Will it boot from that?

Can you enter the bios?
Does the hard disk light flash?
Can you hear the hard disk spinning?
Does it generate any beep error codes?

Best guesses based on supplied info
- bad bios setting
- serious hard disk error, either control circuitry or surface error.

If you can get into the bios, verify the date - if it's wrong the battery may be knackered and need replacing. Whether it's right or wrong, find an option to reset everything to factory defaults and try to boot it again (after saving changes).
