Looking for a certain FTP client - came with XP

Hi,
I am currently able to simply enter ftp://www.website into my address bar and enter username/password in order to view all folders in my website. I am not sure what this client is called or how to attain it for another computer. I believe it came with my Windows XP but am not 100% sure. It is very simple to use; I do not feel like learning another ftp client at this time.

Does anyone know what this one is called? If you do not know, what FTP client is cheap and easy to use?

You're talking about the Windows FTP protocol support that is built in. That support been in Windows as long as I can remember going back to 3.1. You can do a lot from the Command Line [microsoft.com] with this tool. I find it useful for writing batch files which I can schedule to run basic tasks.

FTP support arrived with IE5/Win98. It works well enough but lacks an ascii mode and a "newer files only" mode. I don't update my site very often - too busy, and this just about suffices for me most of the time.

When I looked for an ftp client a while back I gave up because they were either too expensive, too ugly (I can't remember which) or badly written, etc. I was astonished that I couldn't find anything for my needs.

One was so ugly I couldn't bare to look at it. I didn't just uninstall it I deleted the download - I've never done that before.

...in Internet Explorer (just to clarify). There has always been FTP support in Windows via the command line/DOS window.

Why is it that one of my client's computers doesn't have it and he has XP? Is there a way to shut it off? If so how do I determine if it is still on the computer - look under program files?

I just know, when u put ftp: in my address bar it works and with his it doesn't.

FTP is a built-in Windows service component. It is installed with the IIS component, so if you want to add or remove FTP service from WinXP go here:

Control Panel ¦ Add or Remove Programs ¦ Add/Remove Windows Components ¦ Internet Information Services (IIS) (Details...)

Then check or uncheck the box next to File Transfer Protocol (FTP) Service

There are two boxes for ftp (but not next to each other). One enables ftp and one enables passive mode.

omg u got to get either cute ftp or smart ftp or some sort of decent ftp where you can drag-and-drop like a real man.

My friend, a Windows guru, thinks IE's ftp is all he needs. I, on the other hand, can't stand it lol... I'm not a Windows guru so I need a little help.

My favorite FTP program is called Filezilla. It's an open source program and is hosted by sourceforge.net
