Windows Defender Vulnerable to Malware

This update resolves a newly discovered, privately reported vulnerability in the Microsoft Malware Protection Engine....
An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could take complete control of an affected system. An attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights.

Last week I exchanged a number of support emails regarding a program that refused to load. I checked the startup code, and made a few suggestions - yes, you guessed it, Defender was blocking it. Sometimes I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

I also noticed that after one update, AOL instant messenger stopped working on a few computers even though it was allowed in the Defender program list. MSN messenger was not affected.

We've had a few issues where Windows Defender didn't even detect, let alone clean older malware that was easily blocked and/or cleaned by Trend Micro PC-Cillin.

Windows Vista will disable Defender if it is installed on a new computer.
