This is probably a stupid question (sorry)!

Can anyone tell me where to find the folder that holds items that launch on start up?

I've got an irritating application on my laptop (XP) that creates an error on start up. I don't need it to launch on start up so I want to stop the damn thing from launching on start up.

It may be in the startup folder or the registry.

C:\
Documents and Settings

look for your login name and or your login name / computer name, else try All Users, Default User

Start Menu
Programs
Startup

If you can't find what you are looking for there the app must be starting in the registry.

Best thing to do is to download

hijackthis

and run the report to see what is being loaded. Despite it's name hijackthis is actually a safe program for determining if certain software has tried to take over aspects of your PC. Make sure you download it from the official site and run a virus / trojan check on the zip file.

The defaults are:

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

Be aware that there may be programs starting in these folders as well:

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

and

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
