I know someone that's testing this and he wasn't aware of this fact that the OS must be kept up-to-date.

Additionally, it looks as if Microsoft is turning off the first three builds after the end of April.

Testers running Windows 10's preview must keep the OS relatively up to date or face a bricked PC that won't boot.

The first three builds of Windows 10 Technical Preview -- 9841, 9860 and 9879, all released in 2014 -- will refuse to boot at the end of April, according to a message posted by a Microsoft support engineer on the company's discussion forum. This is why life on the bleeding edge of technology is so much fun!

How many geeks actually keep track of days and minutes? (lol)

I haven't joined the Win10 test team yet... had my surprises with Win8 and that was enough for this decade. (sigh)

Yes well my 9926 build takes me out to 1st October.

I'm still trying to get past that with 10041 and 10049.

Something is stopping it, but I don't know what. I just downloaded a straight 10041 ISO - so I'll try that.

You know the silliest thing about all this?

Damned if I can see one iota of "significant" difference between the laptop Windows 10 Preview and the Windows 8.1 on my Desktop PC.

Likely a copied trait from their testing ISO's of other O/S that MS offers. They stop working after a time, usually 180 days.

From memory the 10041 ISO release is only a few weeks old.

There are known Gremlins and Bugs which affect some folks like me. Too lengthy to discuss here.
