XP SP2 and java applets(HELP!)

XP SP2 won't run java applets

Hey I'm new to the forum and I have a problem with XP SP2 not running java applets. Example if I go the the NOAA site and try running a radar loop, the site comes back saying I need to download JAVA. If I go to <snip> and try playing all I get is an outlined box with a small red x in the upper left corner. I have the latest and greatest Java(JRE 1.5.0). I seem to have things set up right according to different articles I've found on the 'net'. Does anyone else have this problem? I know it is probably something small that I missed.

It sounds like you have a faulty Java installation. I have read that sometimes the ActiveX install mechanism over at the Sun site gets messed up with IE. I would recommend that you download the offline installation package (about 15MB) and try installing that.

Bill, Thanks for the info thats what I was going to try next but didn't know if I had something configed wrong with SP2.This problem seem to occur after I installed SP2 so I was trying to determine if it was SP2 or a bad Java install.

When we received our new computer last Aug. with XP Pro SP2 it didn't have Java installed. I tried to install it and kept getting error messages.

The problem was that it was being blocked by the MS firewall.

When you start the download you will see a thin bar just below the top navigation bar asking if it's OK to proceed. I missed this on a number of download attempts.

Another thing is that on dial-up it's a very slow download. I think that's because our Norton AV had to read it all. You might want to consider pausing your AV while you are downloading and installing it.

Finally got Java working on my XP SP2. In IE under TOOLS--Manage Add-ons. Click "Show" drop down menu highlight "Add-ons that have been used by IE" then highlight the java plug-in that you are using then click "Update ActiveX", took care of my problem. Hopes this helps anyone else out there that are having similar problems with XP SP2
