A Relative Shortcut

"My Computer" on Remote Desktops

I'm an admin on a large computer network running Windows 2000. I can remotely explore the content of all other computers but entering addresses like //randomcomp/c$, but there's no way I can see their "My Computer" where all their drives are mapped.

I think I can view My Computer on remote computers simply by planting a link to My Computer on their desktop. The only problem is when I do that, My Computer always take me to <b>MY</b> Computer. How do I get around this? Is there a <b>local</b> address of My Computer that leads My Computers other than mine? If you are not already confused, please help!

PS: I need to access My Computer to see their mapped drives. I seek to use a shortcut to this, because I can access their mapped drives through shortcuts on their computers, but a shortcut to their My Computer would be particularly helpful because it would give me a birds-eye view of their mappings.

I do this remotely via a VNC client. My current tool of choice is UltraVNC. Just set a VNC server on each machine and have it run as a Windows service. Then you can control everything remotely (even reboot).

The My Computer settings are specific to each machine so I don't think you can access them via shortcut as you describe.

Thanks Bill. I've used VNC before but unfortunately it is freeware, which is against company policy (how stupid is that?) Do you know of any other way to remotely view a networked computer's drive mappings (ie c:, e:, f;)?

I think you can see it in the registry

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\

I forget which Key it is, but it's somewhere in there.

Thanks, I'm a step closer. I can remotely connect to their registries, but I can't see their HKEY_CURRENT_USER. I found the mapping key on my own comp, can I find it anywhere else in their registry (I've looked around, to no avail)?

open the registry (REGEDIT)

FILE / CONNECT NETWORK REGISTRY

depending upon your setup you'll search AD for the computer you want..

this all depends on the remote registry service running on the remote computer...

or am I missing something here?
