Hi everyone!
I have this problem:
I cannot see the security tab when right clicking on "options" on files and folders in windows explorer, despite the fact that simple file sharing is turned off.
Chris_f said something about a Mcafee security patch he had installed and caused the same problem but he didn't mention how he solved the problem...
Any suggestions would be deeply appreciated

Welcome to WebmasterWorld jpap.

Are you logged in as Administrator or an Admin level account?

I don't think I am logged in as an Administrator, but I'm not quite sure what you mean. I just logged in as jpap...

Is there a chance that your "jpap" account doesn't have Admin permissions? That security tab might be limited in your account. I'm guessing here because I don't know if you're in a domain or a workgroup. Is this a home machine or something at the office?

Try logging in with the Username "Administrator" without the quotes, and try your password. If you can log in like that are the Security tabs showing up? Maybe you could make the changes you need that way.

According to most resources you should be able to see the Security tab by turning off Simple File Sharing. I wonder if it would change things if you set yourself up in a Workgroup? I'm assuming you're not in a domain.

I did find a registry hack [windowsnetworking.com] that turns off the display of the Security tab:

Hive:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER

Key:
Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Name:
NoSecurityTab

Type:
REG_DWORD

Value:
1

So if your key looks like this you might be able to change the Value of this key to 0 an see whether that fixes things for you.

Make sure you take the proper precautions when working with the Registry (e.g., backups).

I am not in a domain. Anyway, domains or workgroups are not the root of the problem, since things were fine some time ago. Sometime (with no reason at all) the security tab stopped showing. After a rather exhaustive search with google, somebody said that he had the same problem when he installed a (I don't know exactly which) security patch for windows... So, I believe that this is the root of the problem, although I don't know more details.

Try disabling simple file sharing under folder options. Its right at the bottom of folder options.

jpap mentioned that he had already done this in his first post, so that won't work unfortunately. Have you had any luck fixing this? Did you look at the registry?

The registry won't work as well...
