Problem with modem and other devices

device manager emtpy after inserting a USB memory stick

Hi,

I did the following on my CPU :
1/ Connect my camera with USB to load pictures
2/ Disconnect the camera
3/ Insert Memory stick (the one of my wife, so a new one for Windows)

Consequence :
1/ Impossible to get the modem working
2/ Scanner not responding nieder
3/ Printer, mouse, keyboard are OK
4/ It take ages to see My Computer and drive in Explorer
5/ Device Manager is totally empty
6/ Computer freeze when trying to open the "Scanner and Camera" in control panel.

I am not a OS master so what's up doctor?
Any help would be appreciated while I am trying to find solutions in SE.

Run chkdsk /f
Try restarting windows in Safe Mode
Check everything is plugged in ok,
check for overheating, etc, etc

Backup your data before the disk crashes.
