Also, I use Thunderbird for mail and AVG seems to be on the compatible list but anti-vir is not. (some anti-virus programs delete the entire inbox file when it detects one email with a virus)

Which of these two do you use/recommend and why?
AVG isn't slow for me at all. Don't know what to tell you about that one.
Far as I know, either one is magnitudes better than whatever's behind there. Keep whichever one YOU are comfortable with.

Best part - I've had people bring me screwed up machines with Norton Antivirus or others installed on them.
I've installed AVG on them, and it's caught things the others have missed.
I think Symantec does a very good job at tracking and reporting viruses, worms, etc., but their support for older machines and operating systems is apparently not a priority.

Those who have no issues with Norton I bet only use the computer to surf, if you do anything sort of complicated watch out for Norton!
