which free anti-virus?

avg or anti-vir?

I've been using AVG anti-virus and have been happy except that it takes a long time to scan. I've been hearing good things about anti-vir and installed it. Seemed to work ok, although the interface is less intuitive.

Also, I use Thunderbird for mail and AVG seems to be on the compatible list but anti-vir is not. (some anti-virus programs delete the entire inbox file when it detects one email with a virus)

I didn't like anti-vir. No particular reason, simple gut reaction (I've had a LOT of years doing machine gut reactions: since 1984.... so I tend to listen....)

AVG isn't slow for me at all. Don't know what to tell you about that one.

Far as I know, either one is magnitudes better than whatever's behind there. Keep whichever one YOU are comfortable with.

Just downloaded AntiVir. Simple I agree with but works really good.

Used AVG for probably 3 years, and installed on at least 50 machines - every one that I work on for people.

Never a problem.

Best part - I've had people bring me screwed up machines with Norton Antivirus or others installed on them.

I've installed AVG on them, and it's caught things the others have missed.

I use Anti-Vir and like it. I'm OCD enough where I have autoupdate set to run every 6 hours. And, I don't know of any viruses that have gotten through.

What's wrong with Norton. It seems to detect all our viruses.

Norton is getting to be like IE -- too wired-in to the machine. I had to uninstall NAV 2005 from an older PC recently, because it caused the machine to lock up. And this was after re-formatting, doing a clean install of the OS, re-updating the drivers, and then installing only NAV 2005 -- the machine would simply lock up after 30 minutes or so with NAV 2005 installed. It works just fine with AVG installed.

I think Symantec does a very good job at tracking and reporting viruses, worms, etc., but their support for older machines and operating systems is apparently not a priority.

my machine and moi both classify as relics these days. Avg has been a good fit and I'd find it very difficult to be convinced life would be better if I switched to another product.

I have to agree Norton is way to heavy, causes many issues and I always have to get it out of all systems I fix on the side for fun. (Hobby that keeps me in touch)

Those who have no issues with Norton I bet only use the computer to surf, if you do anything sort of complicated watch out for Norton!
