Which language

VB, C#, or JScript?

Hi guys –

I hope this hasn’t been asked a million times, but do use VB.Net, C#, or Jscript with ASP.Net, and which would you recommend? I have experience with VBScript and ASP, but not enough to prevent me from learning something completely different, as long as the learning curve is closer to Visual Basic than C (for example).

Its a matter of preference for the most part. Pick the language that you are comfortable with.

I personally started with VB, but I have been using C# for the last year. I really like C# a lot more than VB. The syntax just makes a lot more sense to me, and the code is a lot cleaner (less wordy).

Again, its all a matter of preference.

If you are used to VBScript, then Visual Basic .NET is the right language for you. Pick up a book or two and try some pages. ASP.NET pages and ASP pages can co-exist in the same site. They just can't share session info.

Thanks for the responses. I know it’s a matter of preference, but since I don’t know either, I’m trying to get the preference of others. I have a bunch of language books that have never been touched, so I’m trying to commit myself to learning one thing at a time this time.

I’m also considering moving away from the Microsoft platform, but I’d rather not (just because it’s been so good to me this far). What has kept you guys sticking to learning .Net as opposed to something Unix based? Also, is C#/VB.Net with Visual Studio still easier than Perl/Python (for example).

If you're looking to divest from Microsoft then take a look at JSP (JavaServer Pages).

ASP.NET is almost a carbon copy of JSP, and JSP is provided free, can run on any platform, and brings in the robustness of Java.

I should point out that ASP.NET is also free. It's Visual Studio that costs money. You can use WebMatrix [asp.net] to do ASP.NET development, which is also free.
