Pipes in asp.net

I happened to stumble across an msdn article on pipes. It peaked my curiosity so I did some googling to see what I could find on them. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any "pipes for dummies" esq pages. Maybe I wasn't searching correctly or something. Can anyone shed some light on what they are and what the benefit of using them would be?

Not sure the context in which you read it but was it talking about piping data? Which is exchanging information between two applications.

"Named Pipes" are supported by a number of network Os including Netware and LAN Manager.
