We are replacing a win 2003 server that was the domain controller and was running active directory as well as dns.
The new server is set up with AD, as a domain controller and is running as a DNS server. I checked the FSMO roles and all roles are transfered to the new server. The clients are all set now to only look at the new server as the dns server.
The one thing I have not done yet is to remove Active directory and DNS from the old server.
Where I'm running into a problem is that, if both servers are running and I disconnect the network cable for the old server, I lose all connectivity to the new server.
On the other hand, if I do a shutdown of the old server, then the connectivity is OK.
I'm a bit reluctant to remove the DNS and AD roles on the old server even though FSMO shows them on the new server.
My current plan is to make sure I have all the data transfered to the new server and then do a shutdown. My guess is that things should work OK at that point. I'm wondering though what would happen should the old server die before I complete the migration
I'd appreciate any thoughts....
thanks

So, I think I'm going to be OK. I'll run DCPROMO on the old server to remove active directory and that should have things in hand..
Thanks
