Would it be easier to just configure the in-house machine to go to the mailserver, pick up the mail via POP3 and then download it off the server and onto itself.
PS the reason why I don't want to just transfer the MX record is because if our internet connection went down (as it did yesterday!) then we'd lose our emails as they'd be bounced, whereas using our web server, it can queue it there for the server to retrieve.
The way that I understand it is that a SMTP feed will spool the messages if your server is off-line. Whereas if the MX record points directly to your office server then messages will be bounced if your connection or server is down.
It would also save money if you were on a dial-up or ISDN line (which I'm sure no one is these days) as it only connects when there are messages to download.
I don't think though that there are many advantages of using a SMTP feed over your web server unless you have an exchange server.
