IIS on my Laptop

Is it Possible?

Its been a while since I developed any Microsoft technology ... how can I get IIS installed on my laptop (running Windows XP personal)? I need to do some maintenance work on an old ASP 3.0 website.

I think I recall that Personal Web Server was discontinued and as I recall IIS only runs on Server versions (NT-derivatives) of the OS.

How can I get a dev environment setup on my laptop to do this project?

Hi cabbagehead,

"Internet Information Services" are only available on Widows XP professional and not any other version.
On the professional it is set to be off by default.
control panel>Admin. tools>Internet information services

The rest should be intuitive but wouldn't hurt to Google for the exact procedure, especially safety wise.

There is such a thing as an IIS emulator. I used one froma company called Buyonica (now defunct) but I did see other ones.

I think there are others.

Ok, so there's a replicator. Good to know.

Does anyone know what M$ got rid of PWS? An upgrade to Professional not only seems like overkill but as I recall, I can't upgrade from a person to a pro version, correct? Two completely different architectures I believe? Sounds like a lot of work just to setup a dev environment.

Does the IIS replicator work well? Does it support .net or just older ASP/COM?

You can also run the cassini web server in your xp notebook. You should be able to get it from asp.net.

I've also run iisemulator... these both work.

Keep in mind that one or both do not handle Application("variables"). I don't remember which though.

Its beginning to look like my only option is to install Windows 2000...a complete reinstall of my OS.

The buyonica solution is defunct and no longer available. ChiliSoft is expensive but even still, its solution as well as SourceForge's solutions are both for Linux only.

That seems to exhaust the solutions I know of.

Does anyone know of any other solutions?

BTW - it appears both Cassini and Chilisoft are available for XP *PRO*. Apparently nothing is available for XP home edition. :(

Did you even look at any of the solutions offered by Googling "IIS on XP Home" like I suggested some time ago?

Why not just upgrade to Win XP Pro instead of Win2000?

I've run cassini and iisemulator on xp home.
