SSL without a cert

Has anyone ever ran secure sockets on Windows IIS without a 3rd party cert?

I just need basic encryption of http traffic between the broswer and server, not bothered about a padlock or any identity verification, can this be done without buying a cert?

Yup. Go to openssl.org for all you need. I remember that it was a bit convoluted, but finally got it to work.
