For shared hosting it would vary wildly from minute to minute on the same machine, and each machine would be different. It would be very hard to get meaningful statistics.

Unfortunately, when it comes to choosing a host, there's not much you can do other than understand the signs of quality you need to look out for.

thanks mrMister.

here is my dilemna:

1. i have one 'semi-dedicated' plan with company A
2. and i have one 'shared' plan with company B

however i feel the 'shared' one is faster! the only significant differenct that i am aware of is that company B only lets you run one app (no subdomains)...

What do you mean by "semi-dedicated"?

Semi-dedicated hosting is the same as virtual private servers. Basically you are given a virtual machine to work with and alloted more CPU and RAM resources.

The reason why the semi-dedicated may be slower is because the server is overloaded, when the Shared server is not.
