Proper way to redirect <root> to www. subdomain

Is 301 Redirect the preferred?

I know this has been discussed before but I'm having a hard time finding anything other than ModRewrite discussions about this.

I AM NOT running Apache.

I was looking at some websites setup at a hosting company recently on a Windows box and for every website they had 2 entries for the Host Header section of the setup.

One for domain.com and one for www.domain.com

I thought having 2 different subdomains answering for the same pages would could cause issues.

I also thought the only "safe" way to do this on Windows/IIS was to create another website and do a 301 Redirect for the entire domain.com.

If you know the preferred way and it has nothing to do with my above ramblings, feel free to just post that. :)
