eBay Nixing Microsoft's Passport

I would say that Passport is essentially dead. At best it will be offered as one alternative to authenticate users, with a webform login, but eBay is cancelling that. There is a real problem with having too many identities and passwords, but Passport has too many problems, both technically and politically to succeed.

What was wrong about Passport? (I never used it myself, except for MSN).

I think the more important news here is that Microsoft has given up on Passport when it said that it will stop marketing it, according to the CBS MarketWatch [marketwatch.com] and the LA Times.

I didn't use it much, it sounded a little fishy to me as a user. From my understanding, I wasn't too comfortable with MS being involved in any way with my access to other sites. Maybe my understanding of it was wrong, but I thought it'd put MS in a too powerful position if site authentication was done via passport....
