Cool apps or PR?

When Office 2003 was announced, the biggest news (at least according to IT pundits) was the ability to save files in XML format. The writers claimed that at last Microsoft was embracing document interchange with other apps and breaking down proprietary barriers.

I'm curious about how this is playing out in the real world - do we have some members here who are doing cool things with Office and XML? Or is this functionality more about public relations, at least for now?

I suppose the underwhelming response is a sufficient answer to this question. I've heard a few complaints about some semi-unique or proprietary aspects of the MS XML implementation, but not of people doing cool things with it.
